During earning of Bachelor Degree in Computer Science, one of my tutor assigned me a little project to develop a software that would take any digit and would produce result of multiples of given input into integers by multiplying increasing value of given input like I gave 2 as input, its equation would be 2×1=2.
This first assignment took many days. Actually I was thinking how to choose programming language that would give instructions to computer to make my assignment. Nowadays, almost all of my assistants and students ask this question.
Generally, when anyone asks this question I just give a little smile and take a look to his/her to read her/his face how much he/she is taking interest to get answer. Then I start a debate about features of language in standard forms i.e. what is language itself, blah blah blah.
At summing up debate among students/assistants I put some questions
- What is the purpose to learn a programming language for him/her
- What methods and procedures he/she will adopt during learning
- What technology, tools should be used
- What methods and plans would be used to build a application/programs
- Less coding to perform more
1) Look around yourself, explore, and make comparisons among programming languages. I often advise to them first look into software houses what programming language is in. Then make deep breath and look at your history what programming languages you had been taught in your educational institute during your studies. All these advise for those who want to choose programming language into his/her career.
For those who just want to do fun activities they are open to choose whatever they want.
2) Exploring websites, video tutorials, asking more questions to tutor, making small applications after ending of every topic, putting questions to classmates or forum members to discuss about problem(s) if you had faced during making a small application.
3) There two modes for writing codes mostly used by developers are used text editors and IDEs. Use whatever you feel comfort. I do use both text editors and IDEs.
4) Depending on your application/program nature, it is decided to use what programming language to use. For example, if you are working on the website application development then you would use programming language that are used to making web application like PHP, HTML etc. If the nature of the program or application is desktop then languages like VB.Net, C#, Java, C or C++ would be choice.
But all depends what is environment demands.
5) Again it depends the nature of the program or application your boss will decide which language would be used. Because he better understand about the features of the programming language features like write less code and get more output.
